Sam Smith reflects on ‘wild ride of self realisation’ in emotional Attitude Awards speech

Sam Smith tearfully thanked their friends and family for being supportive in an emotional Attitude Awards speech.

The 27-year-old, who recently received waves of support after coming out as non-binary, took away the Person of the Year accolade at Wednesday night’s ceremony.

The event took place at London’s Roundhouse and stars including Cheryl Tweedy, Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas and Julian Clary were all in attendance.

Looking every inch the pop superstar in a green kimono and matching trousers, Smith wiped away tears as they took to the stage.

“This is… incredibly overwhelming,” they said. “Thank you so much to everyone in this room. Tonight just watching all of you has been amazing. There’s so much love in his room.

“The last year has been a wild ride of self realisation and has almost felt like a second coming out.

Smith continued: “The reason I’ve been able to show all sides of myself to the public is because I’ve felt incredibly safe.

“I’m so lucky to not only have an incredible family and team, but I also have access to talk to and seek help from the leaders and trailblazers of our community.”

Smith then singled out a number of famous friends, highlighting Munroe Bergdorf for “fighting for us all so passionately every day.”

They also praised Tom Rasmussen, whose book The diary of a Drag Queen came out earlier this year.

“Your book and words completely changed my life,” they said.

Smith confirmed their change of pronouns last month, after making the decision to come out as non-binary.

Posting on Instagram, they said: “Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM.

“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.

“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f*** it!”
