Sam Smith and Rita Ora lead tributes to SOPHIE as iconic musician dies aged 34

Stars have been paying tribute to iconic musician SOPHIE after she tragically died at the age of 34.

Her management confirmed that she died following a ‘sudden accident,’ with fans, friends and fellow musicians left heartbroken by the news.

Stars around the world have been sharing photos and memories of the musician, and penning tributes for her.

Sharing a photo on Twitter, Sam Smith wrote: ‘Heartbreaking news.

‘The world has lost an angel. A true visionary and icon of our generation. Your light will continue to inspire so many for generations to come. Thinking of Sophie’s family and friends at this hard time.’

Nile Rodgers posted a photo of himself with Sophie and added: ‘#RestInPower SOPHIE! You were one of the most innovative, dynamic, and warm persons I had the pleasure of working with at 2019 ⁦@southbankcentre.’

Rita Ora went on to say: ‘Sending all my love and prayers to SOPHIE’s family and friends.’

Finneas O’Connell said: ‘Rest In Peace to SOPHIE. I found myself so consistently inspired by her and in awe of her production. Heartbroken to hear this.’

Meanwhile, Rebecca Black added: ‘I’m having a hard time finding the words that could speak to what i’m feeling right now…SOPHIE was a great. No one touched music how she did + her impact will be felt forever.

‘Her work and what she embodied was incredibly important and special to me and i know to so many others.’

‘Sophie was a stellar producer, a visionary, a reference. She rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both as an artist and as a woman,’ Christine and the Queens wrote.

‘I can’t believe she is gone. We need to honor and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers.’

Rapper CupcaKKe shared a photo of herself with Sophie, saying: ‘Completely heartbreaking news … I’m just in a lost of words … RIP Sophie [sic].’

The Grammy-nominated artist, also known as Sophie Xeon, was known for her hyperkinetic take on pop music, and earned legions of fans for her sophisticated, experimental and surreal style that played with structure and gender expression.

The BIPP star received critical acclaim for her production work with artists including Madonna and Charli XCX.

A statement from her team read: ‘It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you that musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 4am in Athens, where the artist had been living, following a sudden accident. At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We would also ask for respect for her fanbase, and to treat the private nature of this news with sensitivity.

‘SOPHIE was a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists in the last decade. Not only for ingenious production and creativity but also for the message and visibility that was achieved. An icon of liberation.’
