Sam Heughan says new TV show helped him rediscover 'amazing' Scotland

Sam Heughan has revealed his new TV show ‘Men in Kilts’ helped him rediscover how ‘amazing’ Scotland is.

The Outlander actor and his co-star Graham McTavish are set to launch the brand new show, which sees the pair go on an adventure around Scotland as they explore the country’s history, culture and clans.

The Scottish star appeared on BBC’s The Seven via video link on Friday as he discussed the role the roadtrip played in helping him rediscover his birthplace.

He said the show, which he shot last year in between filming for Outlander, is a ‘love letter to Scotland’.

Speaking to the hosts, he said: “It’s a bit of a love letter to Scotland.

“We shot it over five weekends. I was shooting Outlander during the week and at the weekends we got north and we started in Glencoe.

He added: “We wanted to get out there because Scotland is such an amazing country and it has so much to offer.

“I think we forget what’s out there. I think during the state of lockdown where people can’t travel as far, people are rediscovering how amazing Scotland is.”

Men In Kilts was originally due to be released before the end of the year, but the covid outbreak meant some shots were still being finished over the past month or so.

The actors were spotted filming in places like the East Neuk of Fife and Sam was pictured on his own for a photoshoot at both Glenelg and Eilean Donan Castle.

Though the date for when it will first air hasn’t yet been revealed, Sam and Graham have delighted fans by creating a book to go with the show.

Jokingly describing it as a “confessional meets a road trip meets a death-defying experience”, the duo say the book is about ‘Whisky, Warfare and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other’.

It will feature a foreword by Outlander author Diana Gabaldon and will include never-before-published photos of the actors and maps detailing their routes and adventures together.

Written during lockdown, it feature stories of the men themselves and delves into their friendship, careers and their time on Outlander.
