Salzburg vs Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp lauds ‘sensational’ Mohamed Salah goal

Jurgen Klopp spotlighted Mohamed Salah’s mental fortitude in shrugging off multiple misses before scoring an extraordinary goal to seal Liverpool’s Champions League progress at Red Bull Salzburg’s expense.

The Egypt forward spurned a hat-trick of openings he would typically convert in the 2-0 victory, but produced the standout moment of the match on 58 minutes.

Salah sped onto a pass from captain Jordan Henderson, before taking the ball away from Salzburg goalkeeper Cican Stankovic.  He then clipped it into the net with his weaker foot from some distance out on the right, at an almost impossible angle.

“It was for sure the most difficult situation he had,” Klopp said when analysing the attacker’s nine shots at Red Bull Arena. “I have no clue how he scored. He played really well, but didn’t score in the situations we expect him to.

“He stayed on track and making such a decisive, but difficult finish says probably much more about him than all the other goals he scored.

“He stayed concentrated, believed in the next moment and it was a very, very good goal. A sensational finish.”

Left-back Andy Robertson echoed his manager’s thoughts. “Mo had a couple of great chances,” he reflected. “We were just saying to him ‘the next, the next one, the next one’ … and then he scored a ridiculous goal.”

The only negative on another accomplished night for the champions of Europe was centre-back Dejan Lovren picking up a hamstring issue. The Croatia international was replaced by Joe Gomez on 53 minutes and was in some discomfort as he slowly made his way through the mixed zone.

Klopp is optimistic that the problem is not serious, as was the case when Lovren was substituted in the first half of the 3-0 win at Bournemouth over the weekend with cramp.

“We hope that it’s exactly the same as last time,” the German said. He felt something and we made the decision. It’s of course not cool.

“He played really well and was very important. We don’t know more in the moment. It felt similar like last time, that’s it. We have to see.”
