Salzburg vs Chelsea result: Pedro scores wonder goal as Blues win pre-season thriller

Chelsea beat RB Salzburg in their final pre-season friendly of the summer.

New signing Christian Pulisic scored a rapid-fire first-half brace, either side of a Ross Barkley penalty, as Chelsea took a three goal lead into the break.

Jérôme Onguéné pulled one back for the hosts, only for Pedro to restore Chelsea’s three goal lead with a sumptuous finish.

In an exciting finish, Takumi Minamino pulled another goal back for the hosts, with Michy Batshuayi scoring another for Chelsea just three minutes later.

Minamino then scored with the final touch of the match as the game ended 5-3 to the Blues.

Welcome along to live coverage of RB Salzburg vs Chelsea. Callum will be along shortly with all the team news and build-up…

Chelsea’s penultimate pre-season friendly sees them head to Austria, where Frank Lampard will no doubt be hoping to gain a clearer picture of the team that could potentially start against Manchester United in a couple of weeks time.

This evening’s game is unlikely to be easy for the Blues, though. Red Bull Salzburg were dominant in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, winning a sixth successive title having finished nine points clear of nearest challengers LASK.

Chelsea will field a mix of youth and experience, with Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount all expected to feature.

Here’s the latest on Callum Hudson-Odoi, who misses out tonight through injury. N’Golo Kante is still absent, too, although the Frenchman is expected to return soon.

It’s been a successful pre-season so far for Frank Lampard and Chelsea. It began with a draw against Bohemians, but that was followed by victories over St Patrick’s Athletic, Barcelona and Reading.

The last of those games was by far and away the most dramatic. Chelsea left the Madejski Stadium with a 4-3 win thanks to a second half brace from Mount, who will want to impress should he be given another opportunity from the bench this evening.

Lampard will hope to address his side’s obvious defensive flaws. But the signs are positive from an attacking perspective.

The players are out at the impressive Red Bull Arena! Kick off is just a couple of minutes away…
