Sally Dynevor health: ‘It was unbelievable’ Coronation Street star’s past condition

Sally Dynevor, 55, has played the character Sally Metcalfe on ITV‘s Coronation Street since 1986 and has been embroiled in a variety of different storylines during her time on the show. Back in November 2009, Sally shocked viewers when her character was diagnosed with breast cancer. But what shocked fans even more, is the very same year Sally herself was diagnosed with the disease.

The actress divulged to OK! Magazine what it was like playing the role of a breast cancer survivor while she battled the disease herself.

She said: “It was unbelievable. It’s a period in my life that I can’t quite believe happened.

“We always say that life mirrors art on Corrie but it was really strange.

“I just refer to it as a blip. We have to move on.”

Following her diagnosis, Sally underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and following a six-month break from Coronation Street, retuned in July 2010.

Sally went on to credit the soap for saving her life.

She said: “I was 46 and I always thought breast cancer happened to much older women.

“If it wasn’t for Coronation Street I never would have gone to the doctors. I was in total denial.

“I remember saying ‘I’m sure it’s nothing, I’m sure I’m wasting your time’.”

Sally discovered she had breast cancer following a holiday.

So what are the symptoms of breast cancer you should look out for?

Breast cancer symptoms

The first symptom of breast cancer most women notice is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in the breast, says the NHS.

But it’s important to note most breast lumps aren’t cancerous, and that it’s always best to have them checked by your doctor.

The health body lists other signs you should see your GP about:

  • A new lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast that was not there before
  • A change in the size or shape of one or both breasts
  • Bloodstained discharge from either of your nipples
  • A lump or swelling in either of your armpits
  • Dimpling on the skin of your breasts
  • A rash on or around your nipple
  • A change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast

Another Coronation Street star’s who’s spoken about their health in the past is Jack P Shepherd
