Sajid Javid wins backing of Ruth Davidson for Tory party leader

Sajid Javid’s leadership campaign has received a boost with an endorsement from Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson, who has said he would make a “Prime Minister to be proud of”.

Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday, Ms Davidson said she believes the Home Secretary is the best candidate to replace Theresa May after she officially stepped down on Friday.

The Scottish Tory leader said that being Prime Minister “is about character” and she said that Mr Javid has that “by the bucketload” as she praised his “relentless energy” in politics.

She wrote: “Leadership is about character. That is why, among the contenders to become the next leader of the UK Conservative Party, I believe Sajid Javid is the man for the job.”

She added: “Born into poverty, he worked his way to a better life for himself and his family before walking away from a lucrative career in order to give back in public service to the country he loves and which offered his immigrant parents a home.

“His life embodies the Conservative values of aspiration, education, opportunity, hard work and just reward. In an age when authenticity in politics is everything, Saj is the real deal.”

Ms Davidson’s decision to back Mr Javid came as he set out his own plan to tackle the Irish border issue – by spending hundreds of millions on a technological solution.

The support of Ms Davidson, a popular figure in the party who has revitalised the Tories in Scotland, was welcomed by Mr Javid, who said: “Ruth knows a winner when she sees one.”

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, the Home Secretary also said there is a moral duty on the UK to pay for measures at the Irish border in an effort to secure a Brexit breakthrough.

“I think it’s morally justified to pay for that because we both have signed the Good Friday Agreement, we are both absolutely committed to peace on the island of Ireland and – given that we voted to leave and that’s what’s changing the status quo on the island of Ireland – I think it’s morally right that we say, ‘look, we’ll pay because we’ve caused this’.”

Mr Javid has put forward a number of policy proposals, including cutting the top rate of income tax and establishing a £100 billion fund to invest in the UK’s infrastructure.
