Sajid Javid vows UK will be ‘GREAT’ after Brexit as he announces defence spending hike

Mr Javid is set to announce an increase in the 2.1 percent of the UK’s GDP that is spent on defence currently. The chancellor wants the 2020-2021 package to be the most generous in years as the government tries to improve the economy. On Wednesday September 4, Mr Javid will set out the Government’s spending plans for the upcoming year.

He tweeted this morning: “Britain thrives proudly as an open, welcoming, free enterprise and global trading nation.

“The Spending Round will include new funding to bolster our leading role on our world stage and seize the opportunities of Brexit.”

Mr Javid said to The Sunday Times: “Across our history, Britain has thrived as an open, free-trading nation.

“As we leave the EU, we are deeply committed to playing a leading role on the global stage.

“That means bolstering alliances, celebrating our culture, building new trading relationships and making sure we can act when needed to keep our people safe.

“We shouldn’t be ashamed of being proud of our place in the world – we are and will remain a great nation with fantastic assets.”

The Treasury’s new spending package will also include cash for schools, police, council and the NHS.

Mr Javid is expected to pledge £400million in a huge cash boost for schools and colleges.

The money will be used to fund the launch of the new T-level technical qualification which will train and teach young people skills for the workplace.

Mr Javid said: “Further education is a lifeline of opportunity for our young people. I want this investment to start to end the snobbishness in some quarters about the quality and importance of a vocational education.

“It was an FE college that equipped me with the qualifications needed to pursue my ambitions. We’ll make a strong statement in backing it at next week’s spending round and I’ll continue to look at what more we can do to help, just as my FE college opened my horizons and set me on my way.”

“That means bolstering alliances, celebrating our culture, building new trading relationships and making sure we can act when needed to keep our people safe.

“We shouldn’t be ashamed of being proud of our place in the world.”

Mr Johnson remains adamant that he will lead the UK out of the EU by the end of October.

However, there were protests across the country this week after Mr Johnson shut down parliament so he could increase his chances of getting though a no deal Brexit without being blocked.
