Saints Row The Third Remastered announced, boasts reworked assets and new lighting engine

Saints Row The Third Remastered will be dropping next month and comes with updated visuals and tons of DLC.

We weren’t all that impressed with last year’s Switch port of Saints Row The Third, partly because of how dated the game has become, but clearly the people at Deep Silver disagree as it’s being released again, this time fully remastered.

Originally released in 2011 and developed by Volition, Sperasoft is in charge of updating the title for current systems. Rather than simply give the graphics a fresh coat of paint, the studio has reworked a lot of the in-game assets and even incorporated a new lighting engine, which it’s clearly proud of judging by the new trailer.

‘Every weapon has been remodelled, every car has been redesigned and a vast proportion of the city has been retextured; Saints Row The Third has received a full makeover,’ claims Deep Silver.

‘With around 4,000 assets reworked, the complete update has been expertly handled by Sperasoft. It has transformed environments, character models and visual effects, enhanced graphics and incorporated a new lighting engine.’

In addition, the game will come packaged with all the original release’s DLC, which includes three expansion mission packs.

What can be best described as a more over-the-top Grand Theft Auto, the game sees you play as The Third Street Saints, a former street gang that has elevated itself to celebrity status.

At the time, the game was praised for its zaniness and character customisation options, although its crass humour and shallow gameplay has always been an acquired taste. At least the combat has always been better than Grand Theft Auto though.

Saints Row The Third Remastered will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on 22 May.
