Sainsbury’s is doing 10p a litre off fuel this weekend

From this Thursday until Tuesday August 27, the supermarket will give motorists a discount coupon when they shop in store or make an order online.

The voucher can then be used to bag a discount on petrol or diesel at a Sainsbury’s forecourt for two weeks from the date of issue.

The deal can be used to fill a tank up to a maximum of 100 litres at one of Sainsbury’s 306 branded forecourts.

You can find your nearest one using its store locator tool and by searching for “petrol”.

Customers can get the fuel discount on more than one shop as long as you spend at least £60 every time.

Ways to cut down on your fuel costs

HERE are some tips on how you can slash the cost of fuel

  1. Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
  2. Find the cheapest fuel prices. PetrolPrices.com and Confused.com allows you to search prices of UK petrol stations. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).
  3. Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
  • Accelerate gradually without over-revving
  • Always drive on the highest possible gear
  • If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
  • Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving

Just keep in mind the qualifying spend excludes alcohol, fuel, tobacco, gift cards, medicines, stamps, mobile phone vouchers and travel money.

Motorists filling up at Sainsbury’s paid on average 125.83p a litre for petrol by mid-August, according to the AA, so this would bring prices down to 115.83p a litre.

While diesel drivers paid 128.52p a litre, meaning the deal reduces the price to 118.52p a litre.

The offer comes just a couple of days after Morrions rolled out a 5p a litre discount on fuel for shoppers who spend at least £40 in store only.

This deal is available until Sunday, August 25.

Motorists who buy their fuel at Morrisons paid on average 126.66p a litre by mid-August, while diesel drivers paid 129.61p a litre.

It’s always worth double-checking where you can find the cheapest fuel near you in advance while also considering whether your grocery shop will reach the deals’ minimum spending limit.

The deals come as garages, including Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, were accused of “ripping off” drivers by the AA for not passing on a 4p-a-litre petrol price cut.

Petrol prices shot up in July pushing the average cost of tank of fuel to £71.01 – and experts warn that more hikes lay ahead.

This came after they fell for first time in four months in June.
