Sadio Mane issued a classy apology to his former team after helping to end RB Salzburg’s involvement in this season’s Champions League.

Failure to beat Napoli at Anfield a fortnight ago meant last season’s European champions needed to avoid defeat in Austria to swerve the ignominy of exiting at the group stage.

A freescoring Salzburg side, spearheaded by teenage sensation Erling Haaland, gave Liverpool one of their stiffest examinations of the season before Jurgen Klopp’s relentless winning machine eventually made the breakthrough shortly before the hour mark.

Mane, as ever, played a significant role, latching onto Andy Robertson’s pass and providing a perfect cross for another former Salzburg star, Naby Keita, who headed home a simple chance.

‘I think it was a really really tough game today,’ Mane told BT Sport after a 2-0 victory that was settled by Mohamed Salah incredible goal from a near impossible angle.

‘For sure we expected that and we were better int he second half. We create many chances and we scored. Naby scored a wonderful goal.

‘I’m happy for him against his old club so that’s it. I think we deserved to win tonight and we are happy.

‘It’s always nice to come back here because it’s where it all started for me.

‘And I’m really grateful for this club and the fans and as well the people here. Sorry guys, but this is football and we have to do it.’

On Salah’s astonishing strike, meanwhile, Robertson added: ‘It was his toughest chance of the game. Mo, Sadio and Bobby they put tremendous pressure on themselves to score goals.

‘We were just saying to Mo think of the next one and to be fair he’s just taken a ridiculous goal. I don’t know how it’s gone in from there.

‘But it was absolutely fantastic, espeically on his weaker foot. Credit to him he was running up and down and when he went up front he worked his socks off.’
