Ryanair, British Airways and Eurostar among winners as Peta launches first ever awards for cruelty-free travel


PETA has launched its first ever travel awards to celebrate the holiday companies that offer animal-friendly getaways.

Among the winners are well-known brands including Ryanair, British Airways Holidays and Eurostar.

The animal rights charity’s inaugural awards looked at everything from the availability and quality of vegan food to policies that ban animal attractions.

They’ve also included categories for vegan travel accessories, including suitcases and sunscreen.

Among the winners were Ryanair, which won the prize for best inflight meal with its vegan lasagne, while Virgin Trains came top for best vegan food on trains.

Vegan Travel had the best vegan food on cruises while Malmaison offered the best vegan options for hotel chains.

For those living a vegan lifestyle, Happy Cow was handed the prize for the best travel app as it helps travellers find vegan meals wherever they go.

The Harry Potter attraction at Warner Bros Studio Tour London won the prize for the best attraction thanks to its vegan-friendly menu, and the fact that it no longer uses owls or other animals during its performances.

A number of travel firms were also given awards for their animal-friendly policies.

Responsible Travel was named the best travel company as it doesn’t promote zoos and discourages its customers from attending bullfights, swimming with dolphins or taking elephant rides.

British Airways Holidays, which stopped promoting captive animal attractions earlier this year, won a progress for animals award.

While Booking.com’s new animal welfare policy has been praised for prohibiting the sales of marine mammal parks, winning its the award for advancement of the year.

Best travel experience goes to Eurostar, which Peta said offered animal-friendly VR googles and an extensive vegan menu.

When it comes to accessories, suitcase company Lefrik won the prize for best vegan luggage, which are made from recycled bottles while Thought’s bamboo scarves won best travel accessory.

As for travel toiletries, Aesop scooped the prize for best amenity kit while Odylique won best vegan sunscreen with its reef-safe SPF 30 lotion.

Peta Director Yvonne Taylor said: “The number of vegans in the UK is set to skyrocket by 327 per cent by next year, so any company that’s not meeting the demand for animal-friendly travel is missing out.

“All the winners of PETA’s first-ever Travel Awards prove that the future of tourism is packed with animal-friendly options – and free of exploitative exhibits.”

Earlier this year, Virgin Holidays stopped selling tickets to attractions that feature captive whales and dolphins.

TripAdvisor also announced a new animal welfare policy earlier this year.
