Ryan Reynolds to star in live action Dragon’s Lair movie and fans are not happy

The living embodiment of Deadpool has already starred as Detective Pikachu and now he’s going to be Dirk the Daring as well.

You can now add Dragon’s Lair to the list of video games that make no sense as a live action movie but which Hollywood, or to be more specific Netflix, is going to make anyway – no doubt thanks to the success of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Dragon’s Lair is on a very different scale of fame to mascots like Sonic and Pikachu though, and few people probably even saw one of the original laserdisc coin-ops when they were around in the early 80s.

Even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, you’ll probably recognise the images you see here, not least because the game featured prominently in the trailers for Stranger Things 2.

Considering most coin-ops in the early 1980s looked, at best, like Donkey Kong, Dragon’s Lair’s was a breakthrough in terms of visuals, but it was barely a game.

It was basically a roughly 15 minute long animated story running off a laserdisc, where you occasionally had to move the joystick or press a button – except the game never told you when, so it was like a QTE except nothing flashed up on screen.

That made it super hard and, because the laserdisc technology was very new, super expensive. Which we imagine the new movie will make inside jokes about, knowing that Reynolds is involved.

Writers Dan and Kevin Hageman have also signed on, which seems a good match given they worked on the surprisingly good, and knowingly meta, The Lego Movie.

Apparently getting the rights from original creators Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Jon Pomeroy took a year of negotiations, and they’ll be working on the project as producers, along with the producer of It Chapter Two and Trevor Engelson – who was previously married to one Meghan Markle.

It’s still hard to imagine how the film is going to work though, as the original story was just a generic save the princess tale. But again, you’ve got to assume the film won’t be playing things straight.

Some fans are already upset at the idea though, as there was a crowded-funding campaign a few years back to make a full-length animated movie based on the game, which is now presumably not going to happen.

Reynolds certainly does like his video game-influenced movies though, since as well as Detective Pikachu he’s also starring in the upcoming Free Guy – which is a parody of GTA Online and similar titles.

We say upcoming, but who knows when any of these movies are going to be out, considering what a number coronavirus has done on the film industry. But since work barely seems to have begun on Dragon’s Lair, perhaps it won’t be that affected.
