Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have announced Wexham’s inclusion in FIFA 22 exactly how you’d expect – with a tongue-in-cheek video on social media.
Posted by the official Wrexham AFC Twitter account on Saturday, the two stars, who bought the Welsh football club last year, sit behind a spinning globe, clad in their club’s official strip shirts.
The clip pokes fun at the team’s inclusion in the ‘Rest of World’ category, as the only National League side in the videogame, with ‘a little geography lesson’ over where/what Wales is.
‘Our first full season as Wrexham owners has begun, yet many people still don’t know where Wales is,’ Rob explains.
He continues: ‘Many people think that Wales is in England. It is not, Ryan, it is in a region known as… ‘Rest of World’.’
Ryan then carries on: ‘Rest of World is known for its random assortment of cultures, climates and football clubs.
‘If you’re planning on visiting Rest of World, please consider visiting Wrexham – it’s a proud team, honoured to be in Fifa 22.’
‘Even if it is in Rest of World,’ interjects Rob.
As the video cuts, Ryan can be heard complaining: ‘What the f**k is Rest of World? It’s not even a…’
For clarity’s sake, Wales is a country on the island of Great Britain, alongside England and Scotland.
It’s also part of the United Kingdom, the political grouping of the countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
You’re welcome, Ryan, Rob and FIFA 22.
The club’s co-owners celebrated the team’s first win of the season at the end of August, against Eastleigh, with cocktails at 9am, due to the time difference between Wales and the US.
Rob shared a video on his TikTok of the event, captioning it: ‘POV of two guys drinking at 9am to celebrate their first win,’ but when you’re Hollywood stars who buy a football club just because, an AM cocktail seems justified.’
The starry duo also engage with the club’s fans, with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia actor Rob tweeting a message of condolence to a fan’s son after his dad, for whom he’d just bought a season ticket, died aged 74.
‘I’m so sorry to hear that Michael,’ he said. ‘If I’ve learned anything about the @Wrexham_AFC community it’s that you hold each other up.
‘I’m sure he was proud of being a part of that tradition. And I’m sure he was proud of you. I hope we can honour his memory by continuing that legacy.’
