Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to make three significant signings this summer if his side are to catch Liverpool next season.

United extended their unbeaten run to 19 matches with a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Thursday thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

The return of Rashford and Paul Pogba from injury has given United a stellar look since the restart, while Bruno Fernandes continues to sparkle following his £47million arrival from Sporting Lisbon.

United need two wins from their final two league matches to confirm a spot in next season’s Champions League and that would aid Solskjaer’s desire to add top talent to his squad this summer.

The club’s form has led to some suggestions that only minor tweaks are needed but Giggs believes that United need three signings this summer to catch rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

‘Oh definitely I still think we’re off [both] Manchester City and Liverpool,’ Giggs told Premier League Productions.

‘I still think two or three players [are needed]. Ole has done really well in the two transfer windows he’s had.

‘Characters have come in. Fernandes looks a leader, he looks like a character. Harry Maguire is captain. So it’s not just about players, it’s about having that culture and characters that can improve – not just the starting XI – but the squad and the overall feeling of the club.

‘They’re moving in the right direction but I still believe they need three players.’

Goals from Rashford and Martial means the pair now have 22 goals each this term, while Mason Greenwood has contributed 16 in all competitions.

The trio’s tally now stands at 58 goals between them and they are Solskjaer’s favoured front three after Daniel James started the season as first choice on the right wing.

Giggs believes the trio have room to get even better but says Fernandes’ play behind them in attacking midfield has helped to knit it all together.

‘I think Fernandes adds that imagination around the box,’ said Giggs.

‘You see when teams are attacking and give the ball away they’re not safe. That counter-attacking threat that Greenwood, Rashford, Martial and Fernandes have -that running power – and now you’re seeing the decision-making plus execution of the passes.

‘Whether it’s counter-attacking, where they’ve been strong over the last 18 months now, [but] with that added imagination around the box you’re getting all types of goals from all sorts of players.’
