Ryan Giggs identifies two January transfer targets for Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs believes his former team should target Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish or James Maddison of Leicester this month.

The Wales manager clearly thinks United need to strengthen in centre midfield, with arguably their best player in that position in Paul Pogba still out injured.

United are still trying to get a deal done to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes, but they are struggling to agree a transfer fee with the Portuguese club.

And speaking on beIN SPORTS Giggs said they should turn their attentions closer to home if they cannot get Fernandes.

On the topic of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, Giggs said: “I don’t think he’s got the players. I think he’s probably a couple of players short in actually changing that way of playing.

James Maddison was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United at the start of the month

“That No.10, that focal point and also a midfielder. Whether Pogba’s that, he’s been so inconsistent. Obviously on his day he could be that player.

“But they’re missing a Grealish or a Maddison, a player like that which can unlock the door.”

Solskjaer finds himself under increasing pressure at Old Trafford, and Giggs has urged his former teammate to make the signings needed to improve his team.

Giggs added: “Ole has got rid of (Alexis) Sanchez, (Romelu) Lukaku and not really replaced them because for whatever reason the player isn’t out there. He hasn’t fancied a player.

“I think he’s being given time to actually have two or three transfer windows and I think, judging from his first transfer window, he’s done well.

Ryan Giggs has also suggested Jack Grealish as a possible target for his old club

“Now he needs to go again a couple of times and get them players in where you can maybe tweak the way that you play.”

Although United are unlikely to be able to sign either Grealish or Maddison this month, they may turn their attentions towards the players in the summer, with securing a striker arguably their most pressing concern during the current window.
