Ryan Giggs backs 'amazing' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to land Man Utd job full-time

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has hailed the “amazing” impact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had on the club.

Solskjaer has won 14 of his 17 games in charge of United since replacing Jose Mourinho on a temporary basis in December.

On Tuesday night the Norwegian became the first manager in Champions League and European Cup history to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit, as Marcus Rashford’s late penalty secured a 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain that sealed United’s place in the last eight on away goals.

It looks increasingly likely that Solskjaer will be given the job on a permanent basis with reports suggesting that confirmation could arrive during this month’s international break.

Wales boss Giggs played alongside Solskjaer for 11 years and has been impressed with how his former teammate has performed in the Old Trafford hotseat.

“It’s fantastic,” Giggs told Goal.

“No one could have dreamed of the way the team has performed since he took over.

“The results, there’s only PSG [defeat in the first leg], which can happen, where he has been defeated. So far, he has played Liverpool , Chelsea , Tottenham and Arsenal  and he is unbeaten in all those games.

“So, what he has done in a short space of time is amazing.”

United have lost just one game since Solskjaer came in and Giggs – who had a temporary stint as the club’s boss following David Moyes’ sacking – gave his former colleague his backing to land the job full-time.

But warned he will have to maintain his impressive start.

“At Manchester United you’ve got to have that consistency, week in, week out and it is not easy,” Giggs said.

“He has had a great start to his coaching career at United.

“If he gets the job, which I hope he does, he’s got to keep it up, which is not easy in the Premier League and in the other trophies.”
