Russell T. Davies has said he would be totally up for writing a Marvel movie, if they were to create a gay superhero for the franchise.

The Doctor Who, Torchwood and A Very English Scandal screenwriter explained to BANG Showbiz that he’d love to see a gay character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

‘If they want to make a gay superhero: properly gay, not just a nice little character in the background, I would be there. I could write it, I could write it like a demon,’ he said at the PinkNews Awards.

Russell, 56, believes he has a responsibility as a gay man in the entertainment industry to represent the LGBTQ community in television and film.

Speaking about the gay scene in Manchester in Channel 4 drama Queer As Folk, which he also wrote, Russell said: ‘If I can be as visible as I possibly can be and represent us on television, I feel like I have a responsibility to do that.

‘I think it’s needed, I think we all need it now more than ever … We’re in a very darkening world, and there are many fights on the way. And I’m ready to fight: bring it on.’

Russell has also cast Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander in his new series Boys, following three homosexual friends growing up in the shadow of AIDS in the 1980s.

He said of Olly’s ‘amazing’ talent: ‘It was like working with Kylie Minogue on Doctor Who, I was like, “Wow, extraordinary.” I’ve been very lucky.’

While there are no openly gay characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at present, this may be something the franchise can work on in future – and we know someone who would be happy to take on the script…
