Royal travel: UK staycation hotspots most loved by the Royals that you can visit too

The Royal Family are known to jet off around the globe as part of their Royal duty, however, they are also partial to a holiday or two during their downtime. While foreign hotspots such as Malta and the Swiss Alps are renowned for being some of the Queen’s favourites, the Monarch and her family are also happy to spend some relaxing time enjoying the beauty right here in the UK.

With the summer weather in full swing in the UK, and Britons gearing up for a season of domestic travel, there are a couple of regions that holidaymakers can visit much as the Royal Family do.

Of the many holiday destinations Queen Elizabeth is known to frequent, Scotland is one of her most loved.

The Queen usually spends her summer holiday in Balmoral, Scotland, where it is reported she is often visited by various members of the Royal Family.

In 2019 the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made headlines when they, joined with their children, used commercial airline Flybe when flying to visit the Queen in Scotland.

“Walks, picnics, dogs – a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs – and people coming in and out all the time.

“It’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa, for us to come and see them up there; where you just have room to breathe and run.”

Though Britons might not be able to stay in the Queen’s residence, the castle is open to visitors from April until July.

Meanwhile, Scotland is also home to a number of hotels,  B&Bs and plenty of campsites to choose from.

Scotland isn’t the Royal holiday haunt in the UK though.

The Isle of Wight is also said to hold special resonance with the Monarchy, having been a much-loved destination of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Situated just off the south coast of England, the island is home to Osborne House which was built by the royals in 1851.

Prince Albert himself is said to have designed the seaside retreat, using inspiration drawn from the Bay of Naples in Italy.

The surrounding waters are also said to have been a favourite of Victoria, who frequently bathed in them.

It is also thought this is where the royal couple’s children learned to swim.

The Isle of Wight is accessible from the via ferry or hovercraft, taking just 45 minutes from Bournemouth.

Osborne House and its stunning surrounding gardens are also open to the public.

What’s more, the island is steeped in history and culture, boasting stunning views across the land.
