Manchester United still need to invest in new players in the January transfer window despite their impressive 2-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday, believe club legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane.

The Red Devils upset the odds this weekend as they downed the Premier League champions on their own turf thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

It completes a fabulous week for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his side beat Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday and they are now within five points of the Champions League places.

They appear to be improving, but neither Keane nor Neville think they are anywhere near the finished article, with the latter believing the current first team cannot turn in displays like this week on a regular basis.

‘It will give them massive confidence,’ said Neville of the derby victory. ‘I still don’t think it changes what United need to do in January, they still need two or three, if they can get them, experienced players to bolster that squad. They need it, they need it desperately.

‘McTominay and Fred have done brilliantly today and so have that front four, but they can’t do it week in and week out. That’s been demonstrated over a period of time. It doesn’t change anything today, but it gives them players confidence.’

Keane agreed with his former team-mate that it is the midfield and front line that needs reinforcements in the January transfer window.

‘Probably the middle of the park, certainly they need a helping hand there,’ said the Irishman. ‘Probably more options going forward, because you always think of Man United scoring goals, on the front foot and they haven’t been scoring enough goals.

‘The key is now to kick on, you have to win consistently playing for Manchester United.’

Solskjaer was understandably delighted with the victory and was full of praise for his side, especially their ability to counter-attack.

‘We will remember this one – we look so dangerous when we get he ball and go forward against arguably the best team in the world,’ said the Norwegian.

‘They are an unbelievable team and to get a result and defend like we did and create as many chances… we should have been three or four up but for some good goalkeeping.

‘It’s hard to take the ball off them. They can football teams to death but with the pace and threat we have, we look dangerous every time we go forward.’
