Actress Rosanna Arquette has aired a public apology, saying sorry for ‘being born white and privileged’.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday the 59-year-old actress wrote: ‘I’m sorry I was born white and privileged.

‘It disgusts me. And I feel so much shame.’

There was no more explanation behind the sudden outburst and she swiftly changed her public profile to private.

She told The Wrap the FBI advised her to switch it to private.

‘Yes, I’m locked to protect myself,’ she told the website. ‘I was told by the FBI to lock it up.’

She continued: ‘I said yesterday that I am ashamed of the colour of my skin. I am privileged just because I’m white. I feel shame. Because of all the violence that is happening in America and other racist countries.’

She then turned her Twitter to private (Picture: FilmMagic)

Safe to say the Pup Fiction star’s message caused a stir online, with everyone weighing in with their two cents.

‘I think someone like Rosanna Arquette believes they’re coming from a place of understanding and love,’ one Twitter user commented.

‘I don’t think she’s a bad person. What I do have to wonder, outside of the danger of making everything about race, where does her stance leave poor or struggling white people?’

Another wasn’t mincing their words when they added: ‘#RosannaArquette is an idiot. Just shut up. You don’t need to apologize for being white-you just need to apologize for being a moron.’

Ouch.

It’s not the first time she’s spoken out on contentious issues and faced backlash for doing so.

She was one of the first women to call out Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein amid allegations of sexual misconduct, which was part of the beginnings of the #MeToo movement.

Rosanna claimed in 2017 she rejected Weinstein’s advances and ‘her career suffered’ because of it.

She spoke about the backlash she received for going public, with her sister Patricia supporting her sibling in the wake of the controversy.

Patricia (a vocal supporter of the TimesUp movement) wrote: ‘I am very proud of my sister @RoArquette and all the women and men & police who spoke up in this article.’

Rosanna said of the backlash at the time:  ‘I don’t have an agent, so. I think there’s backlash for sure. There’s a lot of people that made a lot of money from him, and continue to.

‘There’s a boys club that protects the boys. He’s just one of many men, as we’re seeing more and more men being exposed for their awful behaviour and their abuse of power.

‘I think Hollywood keeps looking at their watches like, “When is this gonna end?” And it’s not. It’s not going to end until people stop this bad behaviour.’

Metro.co.uk contacted Rosanna’s reps for comment.
