Rory McIlroy wife: ‘We have really tried’ The Open star opens up on life with Erica Stoll

Golf professional and The Open star Rory McIlroy, 30, insisted while his wife Erica Stoll, 31, is supportive of him, she prefers to stay out of the limelight.

“Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments but we have really just tried to keep it low key,” he told The Independent.

“She is a very low key person, not the kind to broadcast stuff, but that side of my life is really good just now.

“We are excited, our parents are excited so it is a really happy time.”

The pair started dating in 2015 before tying the knot back in 2017.

They married in the grounds of Ashworth Castle in Ireland in front of guests including Chris Martin and Niall Horan.

The duo first laid eyes on each other at the PGA tournament of America in 2012, in which he was playing and she was working.

Rory had overslept before his game, prompting Erica to provide him with a police escort to get him to the course on time.

“The thing I love about it is that we were friends before anything romantic happened,” he added of his spouse.

”I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!’”

“I could speak to her about anything, we ended up spending a bit of time together and realised that there was something more there.”

Prior to his romance with Erica, Rory ended his engagement to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, 29, in 2014.

He said at the time: “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been important to two people. The problem is mine.

“The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.

“I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”

Elsewhere, Rory got off to a rough start at The Open today.

The golfer suffered an opening hole nightmare by shooting a four-over-eight.

He also reportedly apologised to a fan after accidentally smashing her mobile phone with the ball.

Ahead of the event, Rory spoke about his approach to the game.

He told reporters: “I’ve always felt I’ve played my best golf when I’ve been totally relaxed and loose and maybe that environment is what I need.

“I’m not saying that that’s the way I’m going to approach it.

“I’m still going to try to go out and shoot good scores and concentrate and do all the right things.”
