Rogue One’s Tony Gilroy Returns to Direct Cassian Andor Series

Rogue One’s Tony Gilroy returns to direct Cassian Andor series

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any updates about Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars vehicle centering on Cassian Andor. Diego Luna will return to play his ill-fated Rogue One character alongside Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO in a new series that takes place prior to the events of that film. But now, it looks like Tudyk and Luna aren’t the only Rogue One alumni coming back for seconds. Variety brings word that the film’s co-writer (and stealth reshoot ghost director), Tony Gilroy, has joined the project as well.

Gilroy and Chris Weitz penned the Rogue One screenplay from a story by Gary Whitta and John Knoll. Of course, Gilroy was already an established filmmaker long before he came aboard the first Star Wars anthology movie. He previously earned Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his work on Michael Clayton in 2007. Gilroy also wrote or co-wrote the first three films in the Jason Bourne series. He later made his franchise directorial debut with The Bourne Legacy in 2012. Most recently, Gilroy directed Beirut, which opened last year.

Gilroy is writing Cassian Andor’s pilot episode and will also direct several episodes of the series. He will work under Stephen Schiff, who is acting as showrunner. When Lucasfilm first announced the series, they described it as a “rousing spy thriller” that follows the title character during the Rebellion’s early years. Given his well-received work on the Bourne films, it sounds like Gilroy is the right man to bring this concept to life.

No release date is currently set for Cassian Andor. However, we expect more details will emerge after The Mandalorian concludes its first season.
