Robin van Persie has urged Manchester United to sign PSG striker Edinson Cavani this summer and a midfield partner for new signing Bruno Fernandes.

Portugal international Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford last month in a £68million move from Sporting and scored his first goal for his new club in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Watford.

The 25-year-old is quickly developing into a fans’ favourite at Manchester United, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comparing him to his former team-mates Paul Scholes and Juan Sebastian Veron.

But Van Persie believes Fernandes would benefit from Manchester United signing another top-class midfielder this summer, and says his former club should also look to bring Cavani to Old Trafford.

Uruguay superstar Cavani has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe over the past decade and was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League during the recent January transfer window.

Asked which player Manchester United should target this summer, Van Persie told SPORTbible: ‘Edinson Cavani. I would definitely go for Cavani.

‘He’s very fit, he’s a proven goalscorer, a goal machine, he has proven it at Napoli, PSG and Uruguay. With him, if he starts, he will get you 25 goals a season.

‘I’ve watched him play, I’ve played against him, he is like a proper goalscorer. He lives by scoring goals so I’d go for him.’

On the other areas Solskjaer should be looking at, Van Persie added: ‘Maybe one midfielder in a playmaker role.

‘Though to be fair I watched Bruno Fernandes against Chelsea and he looks very good to me, very silky.

‘But I would add one other one to put next to him, then with one player who stops the opponent attacking, that is what I like to see. I like to play with five attacking, creative minded players.’

Manchester United’s victory over Watford saw them move above Tottenham into fifth in the Premier League, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

The Red Devils host Club Bruges on Thursday evening, with the first leg of the last-32 Europa League clash finishing 1-1.
