Roberto Firmino scored a dramatic extra-time winner as Liverpool beat Flamengo 1-0 to lift the Club World Cup.
Liverpool have made a habit of scoring dramatic late goals this season and they left it until the 99th minute on Sunday evening as Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane combined to find Firmino on the edge of the box.
The Brazilian striker cut back and made no mistake from close range to add another piece of silverware to Liverpool’s trophy cabinet following their Champions League triumph last season.
After losing their previous final appearance to Sao Paulo in 2005, Liverpool are only the second English team to win the Club World Cup after Manchester United managed it back in 2008.
Flamengo impressed in the early stages at the Khalifa International Stadium, with Bruno Henrique causing Trent-Alexander Arnold problems down the right flank in a frustrating first half for the European champions.
Jurgen Klopp’s men came close to breaking the deadlock right after half-time as Firmino struck the deadlock before Alisson produced a sublime save to deny Gabriel Barbosa in the 54th minute.
Referee Abdulrahman Al Jassim appeared to hand Liverpool a golden chance to win the game in normal time as he pointed towards the penalty spot in the 91st minute.
However, Al Jassim overturned his initial decision after consulting with the video assistant referee and the yellow card Rafinha was shown for his challenge on Sadio Mane was rescinded.
Flamengo pressed for an equaliser to cancel out Firmino’s strike but ultimately had no answer.
