Robert Downey Jr improvised one of his best scenes in Avengers: Endgame, according to co-director Anthony Russo, and we’re all in awe.
We love him 3000.
The Iron Man actor has proven he’s the king of ad-lib yet again, as the director revealed he improvised the scene in which Tony Stark calls Steve Rogers a liar.
Towards the beginning of the movie, when Tony is recuperating after arriving back on Earth, he rips into his teammate for saying that they would all lose together (back in Age Of Ultron).
‘Liar,’ he spits at Captain America, during a particularly heart-wrenching moment.
Anthony was particularly impressed, explaining: ‘I think that was one of Downey’s most inspired performance moments in the movie. He very much reverts to, this is the guy who felt forsaken by his father – you can see his intimacy and trust issues in that moment when he turns on Cap.’
He added to Empire: ‘Downey performed the scene with a lot of energy. We didn’t do it many times, because he was expending himself so, so much. He understood it very well.’
It’s not the first time the 54-year-old has put his own spin on the movie, with him also adding in the beloved ‘I love you 3000’ line.
To add to the cuteness, it’s actually a Downey family catchphrase, with co-writer Christopher Markus explaining: ‘Well, as much as we’d like to take credit for what is inevitably going to be one of the most memorable lines in MCU history, that is something that Robert and his children actually say to each other.
‘He brought it from real life onto the set,’ he told Fandango.
Our hearts can’t take it.
With most of the Avengers cast outing themselves as rule-breakers this week, after ignoring the camera ban to take sly photos and videos of a particularly emotional scene (which they were told was a wedding), Robert previously showed us his diva side in a BTS clip.
Sharing a video from set on Instagram, the 54-year-old jokingly demanded: ‘No notes!’ as the crew giggled away.
‘I mean, let’s see how this first one goes,’ he added. ‘If anyone says “cut”, say it to my face where I can see you!’
