Rivaldo admits it would be ‘a little risky’ to throw Alisson in against Manchester United, but believes the Liverpool goalkeeper would perform if called upon despite his recent return from injury.

Alisson has not played since Liverpool’s opening match of the Premier League campaign when he went down with a calf injury in the first half against Norwich at Anfield.

The Brazil shot-stopper took part in full training for the first time on Tuesday and Jurgen Klopp has reportedly decided to start him at Old Trafford this weekend.

Joel Matip also trained at Melwood this week following his knock and the central defender is expected to join Alisson in Liverpool’s starting XI.

Asked about Alisson’s possible comeback, Brazil legend Rivaldo told Betfair: ‘This is his first match in a few months and perhaps it could be a little risky to put him in to play in such a big match.

‘But he is an experienced goalkeeper and he is certainly prepared to show his value if called upon.

‘Every player loves to play in these kinds of matches.

‘Of course, it would be better to have him fully match fit having played a few games already, but that’s not the case.

‘However, his experience and quality should be enough to mask that lack of sharpness.

‘He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and he is used to this kind of big event, so I believe he won’t have any problems with it and he will be as solid in Liverpool’s goal as he always is.’

United have injury concerns of their own in goal after David de Gea limped out of Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden with a groin problem.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that De Gea is a major doubt for the clash, while also confirming that Paul Pogba will play no part on Sunday afternoon.

‘David needs a scan. I think he’ll be out,’ the Norwegian said.

‘It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it’s just one of those things.’

On Pogba, Solskjaer said: ‘Paul had an injury, he came back, he worked really hard.

‘He came back and played a couple of games, maybe played through the pain barrier.

‘He had a scan after the Arsenal game and maybe needed a few weeks’ rest in a boot so hopefully he won’t be too long, but he won’t make this game, no.’
