Rising star Celeste was named BBC Music Introducing’s Artist of the Year 2019 and won’t be stopping until we all know her name.

She won the award after a big year of releasing an EP entitled Lately, releasing her hit single Strange and even performed a string of festival dates and radio shows.

The 25-year-old started singing after hearing Elton John’s Your Song and, to be honest, that’s a good song to start off with.

‘I remember being 15 or 16… It’s quite a funny choice of song for someone that age,’ she recalled.

‘I asked my mum to come into my room and told her ‘don’t look at me, don’t stare at me but I’m going to try and sing this song.

‘I remember her looking quite pleased. That’s when I remember having the confidence to try a bit more.’

Other year’s winner includes 2018’s Tom Grennan, 2017’s Declan McKenna, 2016’s Izzy Bizu, and 2015’s Jack Garratt.

Celeste was first noticed when she uploaded her track North Circular to be considered for 2014’s BBC Introducing.

She then had her songs played on BBC Radio 1 by Huw Stephens.

Celeste has now had countless plays on Radio 1 and 1Xtra and performed at Glastonbury and American festival SXSW.

Considering she is now touring across Europe with Michael Kiwanuka, Celeste should definitely be on all our radars.

Stephens, presenter of BBC Introducing on Radio 1, explained: ‘Celeste has made so many fans this year, and BBC Music Introducing have been so happy and proud to support her talent at every given opportunity over the last few years.

‘On stage and on the airwaves, we’ve heard Celeste at her brilliant best and her BBC Music Introducing artist of the year award is very deserved.’
