Riot Games has announced that it will host the League of Legends Mid-Season Cup, as the “League of Legends Pro League (LPL) VS League of Legends Champion Korea (LCK).”

The competition will feature a $600K prize pool, and eight teams from LCK and LPL, which are also the top four performing teams in the Spring Split, including JD Gaming (JDG), Top Esports (TES), FunPlus Phoenix (FPX), Invictus Gaming (IG), T1 Entertainments & Sports (T1), Gen.G Esports, DragonX, and DAMWON Gaming.

According to the announcement, the competition will be played online without live audiences. The LPL teams will play from the Shanghai LPL venue, while LCK teams will play at the Seoul League of Legends Park.

In addition, in order to deal with the internet latency issue, Riot Games said it will partner with third-party technology providers, to ensure the latency is around 30-40ms.

Since the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the esports world has suspended in-person cross-regional esports competitions. Geographically, China is close to South Korea, and both countries have well-developed internet infrastructures. This is the first official cross-regional League of Legends competition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
