Today, tournament platform provider PlayVS announced that it has been chosen by Riot Games to be the official high school league and championship programs for League of Legends. This is a multi-year deal that follows the first year of high school “Seasons” in which students across the country competed in League of Legends on the PlayVS platform.
“PlayVS’ unique approach combines the recognition of state-sanctioned sports with an innovative technology platform, providing a great value for student competitors and a sustainable business model to ensure a stable future for high school esports,” said Matt Birris, scholastic program lead at Riot Games. “Extending our partnership with PlayVS advances our mission to establish League of Legends as a generational sport.”
PlayVs has been working to establish itself as the official esports league and tournament platform for high school esports since 2018. The company has seen partnerships develop with the likes of the Southern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF-SS) and other high school sports governing bodies across the country.
In 2019, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) brought on PlayVS to “…begin the rollout of esports competition in high schools throughout the nation.” The NFHS is the governing body for high school athletics across the country.
According to the release, the continued partnership with Riot Games allows PlayVS to improve upon its integration with League of Legends and enables a “better player experience” for participating students.
PlayVS also offers high school competition in Rocket League with the NFHS, and also in Fortnite, though the game does not yet have the approval of the governing organization.
PlayVS has collected $96M in investment funds; receiving $15M in its Series A, $30.5M in Series B, and $50M is Series C.
