Riot ‘Doubles Down’ on Teamfight Tactics Development, Building Competitive Circuit for 2020

League/Tournament Brands:

  • Teamfight Tactics will establish its own competitive scene beginning in 2020, Riot Games announced.
  • Citing a 4:1 ratio of ranked to normal games played, Riot is “doubling down” on the game modes’ development.
  • Teamfight Tactics has the “potential to be a huge long-term addition” to League of Legends, says the publisher.

Riot Games has announced that it will “double down” on development for Teamfight Tactics, the  Auto Chess-like auto-battler mode added to League of Legends in June.

“We’ve shipped a variety of game modes over the years, and Teamfight Tactics is the first one since ARAM (All Random All Mid PvP game mode) to show the potential to be a huge, long-term addition to League,” Teamfight Tactics Product Lead Richard Henkel wrote on the League of Legends website.

Henkel went on to say that the proportion of ranked to normal games in Teamfight Tactics is 4:1. In addition, the game mode is “incredibly resonant” in some of Riot’s most competitive regions including Korea.

Other interesting Teamfight Tactics information from Riot, according to internal data: 33M people are playing the game mode every month; collectively, 1.72B hours of game time have been played since launch; 720M hours have been played in the last 30 days alone; and China is the region with the most League players and game hours.

For this reason, the publisher has committed to building a competitive scene for Teamfight Tactics starting in 2020. Henkel did not specify whether tournaments would begin next year or if the building efforts would begin at that time.

The former is more likely, however, considering the fact that Teamfight Tactics matches have already been conducted through Twitch Rivals in July and are scheduled to be held during the League of Legends 2019 All-Star Event Dec. 5-7.

Including Teamfight Tactics in Twitch Rivals resulted in the auto-battler mode’s two most-watched days on Twitch ever. The mode dominated Twitch as the most-watched title for an entire month at launch in June, but viewership has steadily declined ever since (with the exception of the Twitch Rivals event).
