Rio Ferdinand is a huge fan of England’s young and exciting team and hopes to see Arsenal and Manchester City starlets Reiss Nelson and Phil Foden involved next.

Gareth Southgate has not been afraid to put his faith in youth since taken over the reins in charge of England, with Jadon Sancho starting – and assisting – in the Three Lions’ opening Euro 2020 qualifying campaign win over Czech Republic on Friday.

Chelsea’s 18-year-old winger Callum Hudson-Odoi was also given a cameo late on, earning his first cap for the senior team.

Ferdinand believes the sky’s the limit for the new generation of England players and has encouraged Southgate to get even more of the nation’s talented youngsters involved.

Asked why he feels this side is so promising, Ferdinand told The Sun: ‘Because of the youngsters.

‘Southgate gets it, the excitement and pride it gives to fans to see young players in their team. There’s huge potential there.

‘As well as Hudson-Odoi and Sancho, I want to see Phil Foden play. Everyone’s talking about him. Same with Reiss Nelson.’

Foden and Sancho were both part of Manchester City’s academy, though Sancho left for regular first-team football in Germany while Foden has played a bit-part role for the Premier League champions.

Nelson, like Sancho, opted for a loan in the Bundesliga, scoring six times in 18 league appearances – though his form has dipped in the second half of the season.
