Rihanna and Lizzo mixed things up on the red carpet on Saturday night as they were named the big winners at the 51st NAACP Image Awards.

It was a great night for woman of the mo’ Lizzo, who was named entertainer of the year at the event, which celebrates the best black performers, activists and projects.

Wearing a custom chain mail Mary Katrantzou gown with her own name on it (now that’s a flex), the Good As Hell singer stunned at Pasadena’s Civic Auditorium, looking elegant with her hair piled on her head in a seriously chic up-do.

Thanking the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) for her award, Lizzo wrote on Instagram: ‘I’m not always gonna say it the way I planned to. But I mean it from my heart. Thank you @naacpimageawards and the @naacp for accepting me for exactly who I am.

‘Loud and proud. Big and beautiful. Perfectly Black in Every Way.’

Also taking to the stage was Rihanna, who looked all kinds of amazing in a purple dress with some big ol’ ruffles and crepe detailing.

Wearing her hair in a sleek ponytail and some killer red lipstick (Fenty, we presume?), the sometime-singer used her platform to call for change as she accepted the President’s award for her philanthropic work.

The beauty mogul emphatically told her fellow guests: ‘We can only fix this world together, we can’t do it divided. I can’t emphasize that enough, we can’t let the de-sensitivity seep in.’

She continued: ‘We have been denied opportunities since the beginning of time, and still we prevail. Imagine what we could do together.’

In the audience, the two pop superstars came together with fellow musician Janelle Monae, who rocked a black cropped top and draped orange skirt.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that conversation…

Keeping up with the funky dress trend was Oscar-nominated actress Cynthia Erivo, who matched her mint buzz cut with an amazing light green dress with silk flowers over the peplum detailing.

Never one to keep things plain, the British actress stuck to her usual cool jewellery, focusing on the ears with dangly earrings and edgy piercings.

Other big winners of the night included film Just Mercy, which took home the bulk of the top film awards, including best motion picture and acting awards for Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx, who looked dapper in near-matching tuxedos.

They were joined by their co-star Brie Larson, who wore a white and blue Rodarte gown and some phenomenal beaded mesh gloves that we’re adding straight to our mood board.

One surprise winner of the night was Blue Ivy Carter, who won her first major award at the age of eight for her collaboration with mum Beyonce on Brown Skin Girl.

Beyonce took home a total of six awards at the event, including outstanding female artist, but sadly wasn’t on hand to collect her prizes.

Still, had mum and daughter turned up, we’re sure they would have rocked the red carpet too.
