Ricky Gervais has slammed fans of a bullfight festival after seeing a horrifying video of a bull being set on fire in Spain.

The sickening viral clip shows the animal’s horns being set ablaze, before it’s allowed to run free in front of a jeering crowd.

The spectators – which include children – pull the terrified bull’s tail and throw sand and plastic bottles at it as part of the festival Toro Embolado, or Fire Bull.

It’s believed that the animal was later forced into a metal cage and killed with a knife.

Ricky, who is a fervent animal rights advocate, tweeted ‘evil braindead c***s’ in response to the footage.

He was challenged by one user, who asked if he feels the same way about halal slaughter, which often refers to the way animals are killed for consumption.

The comedian, 58, replied: ‘To all the people asking why I’ve never criticised Halal, I have. Many times. Along with all religious slaughter.’

He then argued that all animal cruelty is ‘wrong’, regardless of whether it’s part of someone’s ‘tradition’ or ‘culture’.

‘Animal cruelty is wrong. “But, it’s tradition”, doesn’t make it right, “It’s part of my religion” doesn’t make it right, “It’s my culture”, doesn’t make it right, and “people are more important” doesn’t make it right either,’ he raged.

‘You know why? Because it’s just f***ing wrong.’

The video of the bull was recorded and shared by activists from two animal rights groups, Animal Guardians and La Tortura No Es Cultura (Torture Is Not Culture).

Activists are preparing to lodge a complaint about the festival, which takes place in the Vall d’Uixó in Spain and celebrates the end of the Muslim occupation of Spain in 1492.

They claim Castellón’s regional government has been promoting and financing the event.

Ricky is known for slamming animal cruelty and recently spoke out over a disgusting video of a YouTuber filming himself biting and beating his puppy.

The After Life star said he ‘wants to smash his face in’ after being tagged in the footage.

He’s also been campaigning tirelessly to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China, explaining that the mistreatment of animals ‘eats him up inside’.

‘I have empathy for everything – I’m hardwired to – and some people think that animals are like inanimate objects without feelings and that dogs, say, don’t feel sad. But that’s just not true,’ he told AOL.

He added that when he sounds off about animal cruelty on social media, trolls always find a way of ‘heckling’ him.

‘I’ll tweet about a bull being tortured to death and say, “Ban bullfighting,” and someone always says, “What about the kids in Syria?”‘ he said

‘People can always think of a more worthwhile cause than yours, but they’re just trying to heckle you. They’re heckling.’

The comic has also hit the headlines for falling completely in love with Brandy, the dog he hired for his Netflix series After Life.
