Rick and Morty season 4: Rick revealed as secret parasite by fans?

Season four of the irreverent cartoon is set to return at an unspecified date, but Rick and Morty’s current run on Adult Swim has yet to introduce any of the mind-melting twists or season arcs that have characterised previous seasons. That could all be about to change as one fan has hit upon a potential secret show creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon could be keeping up their sleeve.

Reddit user YungDaggerDic suggested: “What if Rick (voiced by Justin Roiland) is really one of the parasites that infested Morty and his family?”

In the season two’s episode Total Rickall, the Smith household becomes the stage for a small scale alien invasion.

Worm-like alien parasites begin infiltrating the family by implanting fake memories into their heads, quickly escalating into a swarm of surreal characters that Morty and his family believe are real friends and family.

Among them are Cousin Nicky, Reverse Giraffe, Baby Wizard and Sleepy Gary, Beth’s (Sarah Chalke) fake husband with whom Morty’s father Jerry (Chris Parnell) ‘remembers’ having a brief holiday fling.

The Redditor continued: “Maybe she doesn’t actually remember him and assumes that Rick was her father.

“She could be having a similar reaction to Jerry where she feels so connected to him and wants him to stay.”

Although this would make for a dramatic and unexpected turn later in the season, the twist would break the earlier established rule that the parasites are unable to implant negative or traumatic memories into the heads of their victims.

That said, showrunners Justin and Dan frequently display a flagrant disregard for the flimsy rules of the show.

Before the latest season, it may have been possible the current universe Rick could have been infiltrated at some point by a creature not dissimilar to the parasites that take over the Smiths’ home.

However, the original Rick is inadvertently killed by Morty in the premiere, projecting his consciousness across clones in parallel dimensions to stay alive, and he doesn’t ever revert to a parasitic form.

Rick and Morty is infamous for its parodic takes on both current and past pop culture and with the Korean film Parasite becoming an unexpected sensation in the US fans could see writers Justin and Dan attempt their own sci-fi spin on the film’s thrilling class warfare.

Although, bear in mind the writers of the series keep it fresh at all turns, and it’s rare that concepts and extraterrestrial threats are brought back for what could be considered as a cheap rehash.
