Rhian Brewster has revealed that Jurgen Klopp dismissed the idea of him leaving Liverpool on loan as he wants him to compete for a first-team place at Anfield.

The 19-year-old has made only one senior appearance for Liverpool since joining the club from Chelsea in 2014, starting in a 2-0 win over MK Dons in the Carabao Cup in September.

Brewster was named on the substitutes bench for both of Liverpool’s matches against Chelsea in the Super Cup and Premier League but otherwise has failed to make any matchday squads.

Despite his lack of first-team opportunities, though, Brewster is adamant that he is in the right place to improve, stating that Klopp has set out a plan for his development.

‘You’ve just got to be patient and wait for your turn,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘Obviously the boss [Jurgen Klopp] has a plan for me and he knows what he’s doing, clearly.

‘He’s been saying just be patient, you’re time will come and I’m just waiting and being patient.’

When asked whether he could have left on loan, Brewster replied: ‘He [Klopp] said no straight away which shows he has great faith in me and wants to push me towards the first-team

‘Obviously it’s hard to get game time because of the front three because they are all amazing players so it’s going to be difficult but I’ve just to keep going.’

As in previous seasons, Liverpool have relied upon Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to spearhead the attack, with the trio scoring 12 league goals between them so far.

Brewster’s chances have been further hampered by Divock Origi’s re-emergence over the past 12-months with the Belgian establishing himself as Liverpool’s second-choice centre-forward.

The London-born forward was in action for England U21s during the international break and he delivered a lively cameo appearance off the bench in a 5-1 win against Austria on Tuesday.

Brewster set-up Eddie Nketiah for his hat-trick goal on the night and also won a penalty which the Arsenal striker failed to convert.
