Revoke Article 50 petition: Celebrities declare support for reversing Brexit and help campaign hit one million

Dozens of celebrities have backed a petition to revoke Article 50 as it soared above one million signatures in just 24 hours.

Big names from the world of showbiz lent their support to the anti-Brexit petition, which was racking up around 2,000 signatures a minute.

Singer Annie Lennox, actor Hugh Grant, scientist Brian Cox and comedian David Mitchell were among the big-name stars who urged their followers to put their names to the petition.

The page on the Government website read: “The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is ‘the will of the people’.

“We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People’s Vote may not happen – so vote now.”

Many MPs also pushed the petition, with Labour’s Ben Bradshaw, Mary Creagh and Lib Dem Tom Brake tweeting about it.

The 100,000-signature threshold for the petition to be debated in Parliament was quickly surpassed on Wednesday and the phrase “revoke Article 50” became a global trend on Twitter.

The website for the petition briefly appeared to have crashed shortly after 9am on Thursday – showing only an error message – but was later reinstated.

Mrs May had said that it was “a matter of great personal regret for me” that Brexit will not go ahead on March 29 after she had to ask the EU for a delay.

She blamed MPs for failing to agree a means to implement the result of the 2016 referendum and said she believes voters just want this stage of the Brexit process to be over.

Mrs May has asked the EU to allow the UK’s withdrawal date to be delayed to June 30 and threatened to resign as Prime Minister if MPs demand a longer postponement.
