Review of Blue Boar Hotel and pub in Witney, Oxfordshire


THE Blue Boar Hotel is a recently renovated former coaching inn in the heart of Witney – former Prime Minister David Cameron’s old constituency.

This hotel, restaurant and pub is popular as a base for exploring the Cotswolds, or for attending the Cheltenham races.

  1. Where is Blue Boar Hotel?

    The Blue Boar Hotel – with rooms from £90 a night – is a 17th century inn that sits on the market square of the pretty Cotswolds town of Witney, Oxfordshire.

    Witney is an historic market town with plenty of cafes, shops, restaurants and pubs.

    The easiest way to get there is drive, but there is no parking so you will have to find a spot in one of the town car parks. The nearest train station is Hanborough, which can be reached by bus from outside the hotel.

  1. What is Blue Boar Hotel like?

    A quaint hotel – very classic Cotswolds, the property felt like it had recently been done up but retained a country chic feel.

    The hotel is in a great location for exploring the town and the surrounding area, but there isn’t much to do at the property apart from eat at their pub or restaurant.

    There were 20 rooms, ranging from singles to four poster suites, some of which overlook the market square.

    It was mainly older families and couples staying when we visited, but the hotel does offer families rooms for those staying with young children. 

    They also advertise for group bookings for the Cheltenham races.

  1. What to do at the Blue Boar Hotel?

    There are no other facilities apart from the pub and restaurant, but Witney offers a range of shops, cafes and restaurants.

    Around the corner from the hotel are bars that offer live music in the evenings and there is the Wychwood Brewery five minutes walk away, which makes the well-known Hobgoblin ale.

    For kids, there is Cogges Manor Farm – a living farm museum that holds demos and feeding sessions with a range of animals, including pygmy goats and Shetland ponies.

    Alternatively, visit some of the neighbouring Cotswold villages that have been used as filming locations for Downton Abbey and the new Emma movie. 

  1. What is there to eat and drink at the Blue Boar Hotel?

    The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and the pub also serves food.

    There are a range of made-to-order choices at breakfast, including eggs Benedict, the full English and chorizo and sweet potato hash.
    For lunch and dinner, there are dishes including woodfired oven pizzas, burgers, pasta.

    The restaurant has loads of choice, woodfired pizza oven, plus burgers, steak and chips and pasta.

    The pub has a cosy feel, with beaten-up leather sofas and a range of local beers on tap.

    All offer tea and coffee-making facilities and a tv, while rooms in the main building also offer a DAB radio and a Nespresso pod machine.
