Report: PlayStation to Receive the Next Few Call of Duty Games

Microsoft’s deal to acquire Activision has left a lot of questions on the table in regards to what games would still appear on PlayStation consoles, if any. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently said that he was assured that Activision’s games would be on as “many devices as possible,” but that still wasn’t concrete. According to a new report, this includes at least the next three Call of Duty games.

Bloomberg’s report states that Activision had already committed to make the next three Call of Duty installments on PlayStation consoles prior to the deal being made public. This includes the 2022 and 2023 Call of Duty games as well as Warzone 2, which is also currently slated for 2023. 2022’s Call of Duty has been strongly rumored to be Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2. Treyarch is said to be working on 2023’s mainline title. The acquisition is also expected to close sometime within the next six to 18 months, which is likely why this report only covers the near-term entries.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently tweeted it was their “intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and [their] desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation.” However, the tweet was vague enough to be open to some form of interpretation. This report adds some more context to said tweet.

However, it is unclear how Microsoft will act after that third Call of Duty title as it will presumably have control on what to do with the series from then on. Activision has reportedly mulled over the idea of skipping annualized Call of Duty games, which is another aspect that could have an unknown role down the line for the franchise’s future, or lack thereof, on Sony’s consoles.

Microsoft has honored previous contracts before, as showcased by the Bethesda acquisition. Deathloop came out on PlayStation 5 (and PC) and Ghostwire: Tokyo is still slated to release on PS5 (and PC) sometime soon. However, Bethesda’s currently announced titles, like Redfall and Starfield for example, are not coming to PlayStation consoles.
