BEST DE-FENCE: Fence taken a hit? Calling in a handyman can cost you.

But according to the experts at Wickes, if you pop into store they can advise you how to deal with your unique fence issue (because it depends on the type you have) for a lot less.

Then, once you’ve sorted out any damaged panelling, make sure you apply a paint or wood stain to further protect the timber – you can currently grab 2.5l of “5-year” woodstain at Wickes for £10 — saving on Ronseal’s similar product, £13.99 for 750ml at Amazon.co.uk.

Saving: £3.99 plus 1.75l extra

LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: After the storms, it might be a good time to give your property a once-over.

Andy Barr, co-founder of price tracking site alertr.co.uk, said: “When it comes to damaged paintwork, look to dig out some leftover paint in your shed or garage rather than going out to buy more. “You can easily touch up where paint is missing.
“Take a look at places like Facebook Marketplace.

“There might be some handymen willing to do jobs for free, such as fixing the odd tile that has fallen down or even helping with your guttering.”

DIY-ING TO SAVE: If you need to do it yourself, cashback deals can cut costs. Mymoneypocket.co.uk has some great incentives.

For example, get up to 6.4 per cent cashback when purchasing DIY items from wilko.com and 2.4 per cent cashback on buys from B&Q online.

Saving: up to 6.4 per cent

OUT WITH THE MOULD: Dean Davies, of cleaning firm Fantastic Services, says: “To help prevent mould growth, dry out the affected areas.

“If the weather allows, open windows to let the air circulate, use fans and dehumidifiers, and clean all wet items and surfaces with hot water and dish soap.”

For an extra kick, I like Dettol antibacterial mould and mildew remover spray, £2.50 at Tesco.

That’s cheaper than HG mould remover spray, £9.95 at victorianplumbing.co.uk.
