REMAINER plotters trying to oust Boris Johnson are “thick and dangerous”, allies of the Prime Minister have declared.

Loyalists lashed out at senior Tory Tobias Ellwood after he called for the UK to rejoin the Single Market, amid fears he is part of a pro-EU coup.

He said inflation, the cost-of- ­living and problems in Northern Ireland would be solved by reverting to a soft Brexit.

But one minister told The Sun: “Often the most dangerous people are thick people who don’t realise they are thick — Ellwood is a prime example.”

They said the plot, including “disgruntled former ministers and disaffected would-be ministers”, was “in large part” down to Brexit-haters.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Priti Patel said letters of no-confidence in the PM were a “sideshow” and that Tories should focus on the country’s “real challenges”.

But Lord Evans, chairman of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, broke a Jubilee truce to “raise questions” about ministerial conduct.

He said that it is “critical” that the PM’s ethics adviser, Lord Geidt, be free to launch his own inquiries into possible breaches of lockdown rules.
