Gary Neville has launched an astonishing attack on the Premier League clubs threatening to break away and form the European Super League – accusing Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal of committing a ‘criminal act’ in abandoning their fans and their traditions.

The Premier League’s ‘big six’ – Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham – are understood to be among the 12 clubs to have signed up for the new format which could be announced tonight.

The proposals have been strongly condemned by the Premier League, its European counterparts and Uefa with Neville leading the criticism as the news broke during Manchester United’s clash with Burnley.

Neville insisted clubs pushing for the new format should be punished with fines, point deductions and even have previous Premier League titles stripped from them – insisting Liverpool and United are guilty of the biggest acts of betrayal.

‘I’m disgusted with Manchester United and Liverpool most,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘Liverpool, they pretend, ‘You Never Walk Alone’, the people’s club, the fans’ club. Man United, 100 years of history borne out of workers around here. And they are breaking into a league without competition?

‘It’s an absolute disgrace and honestly we have to wrestle back the power in this country from the clubs at the top of this league and that includes my club. I have been calling for 12 months as part of another group for an independent regulator to put checks and balances in place to stop this happening.

‘It’s pure greed. They [club owners] are imposters. The owners of this clubs, owners of Liverpool, owners of Chelsea, owners of Man City, they have got nothing to do with football in this country.

‘There are fans that have lived and loved these clubs and they need protecting.

‘Deduct them all points tomorrow, put them at the bottom of the league and take the money off them. You have got to stamp on this. It’s criminal. It is a criminal act against football fans in this country.’

The clubs involved will reportedly make an announcement at 9:30pm on Sunday evening and while Neville believes ‘the big six’ will back down following waves of criticism, he insists lasting damage is already done.

‘If they announce a letter of intent has been signed they should be punished heavily. Massive fines, points deductions, take their titles off them, who cares.

‘Give the title to Burnley. Give it to Fulham. Let Fulham stay up and relegate United and Liverpool and Arsenal. Because those three are the ones that should suffer most.

Chelsea and City, new money in the game, I’m not happy with them either and Tottenham I’m not that bothered about.

‘Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal they should know better. The history and tradition that runs through those clubs is enormous and I value it. But they leave a lot to be desired at this moment in time.

‘Liverpool… seriously? I don’t like them, they don’t like me. But one think I thought about them is they are honest, they had integrity, they would look after their people. That’s gone, forget that.

‘If they sign that letter they are as bad as the rest of them.’
