Red weather warning issued for Turkish holiday resorts as tourists brace for storms and flooding


TURKISH holidaymakers have been warned of heavy storms and flooding following a red weather alert at resorts across the coast.

The warning affects Antalya, a popular holiday destination for Brits.

Turkey’s General Directorate of Meteorology issued the red warning for today and tomorrow due to excessive rainfall.

It is the first time the colour code has been used in the country, after the new coding system was introduced.

Strong winds are expected as well as flooding and storms along the Mediterranean coast.

The UK Foreign Office has updated their travel warning for tourists in the region.

They advised: “On 10 December the Turkish authorities issued a red weather warning for the Antalya area.

“Central Antalya, Serik, Kemer, Finike and Kumluca may be affected by storms, heavy rain, strong winds and flooding between 6am Wednesday 11 December and 12pm Thursday 12 December.

“If you’re travelling in the area you should check local weather reports regularly.”

Antalya recently reported a record 15 million tourists this year, with the majority from Russia and Germany.

Earlier this year, planes were damaged and 12 tourists were injured at Antalya Airport after a tornado hit.

A terrified market trader was thrown 13ft in the air after a tornado in Turkey barrelled through the town of Kadirli.

The UK is facing weather warnings in the north west, with winds up to 70mph and the risk of flooding.
