Red Sonja Gets Transparent Creator Jill Soloway to Direct

Red Sonja is back on track after initially being put on hold. Jill Soloway has signed on to write and direct the long awaited project after Millennium Films decided to cut ties with Bryan Singer. When the project was first announced, many were shocked to see Singer’s name attached after the Atlantic published an investigative report alleging the director had sexually assaulted multiple young men when they were underage over the past 20 years. Millennium Films CEO Avi Lerner at the time stuck by Singer and called the report “fake news.”

Jill Soloway is now on board to helm the project. Red Sonja has been in development for over a decade now with a variety of different names attached over the years. Robert Rodriguez was on board at one time with then-girlfriend Rose McGowan intended to star. However, it later fell apart. Bringing Soloway to the team seems like a wise decision at the moment since she is known for her talents in elevating a strong female character.

Jill Soloway won two Emmy awards for her directing work on Amazon’s Transparent with other credits including United States of Tara, Six Feet Under, Afternoon Delight, and I Love Dick. Taking Red Sonja to the big screen has been a challenge, but Soloway seems to be the perfect candidate to give the character a “bold new take.” Soloway had this to say about directing the movie.

“I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja‘s epic world to life. Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.”

While many would like to believe Bryan Singer was fired from the project because of the deeply disturbing allegations that have followed the director for over 20 years, that isn’t the case. Millennium Films was unable to secure a distributor in the United States with Singer’s name attached, so they decided to sever ties. Avi Lerner more than likely saw an attempt to cash in on Singer’s recent success with Bohemian Rhapsody. With that being said, Singer’s erratic behavior on the set and ultimate firing ended up taking up more news than anything when the movie was being made.

Red Sonja was created in 1973 by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics. The character isn’t one of the most well-known characters out there, but Millennium Films put it on the fast track after the success of Wonder Woman. Now that Captain Marvel came out and earned over $1 billion at the box office, there will certainly be pressure on Jill Soloway to deliver the goods. This is a breaking story and more news, including casting, is expected to be announced soon. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to announce that Jill Soloway had agreed to write and direct the Red Sonja movie for Millennium Films.
