Red Bull Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed that Liverpool have held talks to sign Takumi Minamino.

On Thursday, widespread reports claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side are preparing to trigger a £7.25 million release clause in the Japan international’s contract with the Austrian champions.

Minamino has already impressed in both Champions League games against Liverpool this season, while Jurgen Klopp clearly looked impressed with the forward’s goal at Anfield in October.

Reports have claimed that Klopp has been the driving force behind Liverpool’s push to sign Minamino in the January transfer window.

And Salzburg have now confirmed that they are in negotiations with the Champions League holders.

‘I won’t comment on contract details. But it’s true there are talks with Liverpool,’ Freund said on Thursday.

‘It’s an honour for our club that the current Champions League winners and other big clubs are looking at our players.’

When asked if a January transfer could happen, Freund replied: ‘That could be possible.’
