She continued: ‘One, because there’s a lot of physicalities… but also, they heated up the set very high, to almost 100 [degrees] Fahrenheit, so that we could never cool down.’

However, she told that it was all worth it as she gushed: ‘The artistry that’s gone into this film – and to know that it’s all live singing and dancing – spectacular is the right word to describe the film.  It’s epic.’

And the film’s director Tom Hooper finally spoke about the furore in an interview with the Empire magazine earlier this month.

The London-born filmmaker said he found the backlash ‘quite entertaining’ and that the visual effects and the designs of some of the cats have since evolved.

‘We’d only finished shooting in March, so all the visual effects were at quite an early stage,’ Hooper, 47, explained of the trailer that was released on July 18.

‘Possibly there were, in the extremity in some of the responses, some clues in how to keep evolving,’ he added.

‘When you watch the finished film, you’ll see that some of the designs of the cats have moved on since then, and certainly our understanding of how to use the technology to make them work has gone up, too.’

Hooper won an Academy Award for directing The King’s Speech and his other big screen credits include Les Miserables and The Danish Girl.

The musical was inspired by T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot.

Andrew Lloyd Webber premiered the show at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 years and earned the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical.

In 1983, the Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and went on to run for 18 years.

It has been translated into 19 languages and been staged in more than 50 countries.

Cats the movie opens in theatres on December 20.
