Real Madrid were trailing the last-16 second leg to Ajax 2-0 on the night – and 3-2 on aggregate.
Ajax appeared to have added more misery to Real’s terrible performance when scoring a third through Dusan Tadic midway through the second half.
But eagle-eyed official Felix Brych brought the play back to check VAR on the ball possibly going out in the build-up to the goal.
As the VAR replays show, the ball appears to go out before Ajax run on with possession and score.
Match officials spent minutes assessing the decision.
And they eventually GAVE the goal even though it did appear as though all the ball had gone out of play.
Real responded to going 3-0 down with a goal from Marco Asensio.
Yet moments later Ajax made it 4-1 on the night thanks to Lasse Schone’s effort.
The goal left Real stunned and heading out of the competition they have won for the past three seasons.
Reacting to the result, ex-Tottenham star Chris Waddle said: “Ajax are a good, young side and it’d be a great result for them.
“But when you look at their results, Real Madrid have had a funny season.
“They’ve lost to teams they’d never normally lose to.
“It’s a changing period for Real Madrid.
“They’ve had a settled side for two or three years, now people have moved on and it’s time to build a new side.”
