Raul Sanllehi is blocking efforts to have David O’Leary placed on the Arsenal board, according to reports.

O’Leary, a former Arsenal captain and club legend, was set to be appointed to the board as a football consultant.

However, the Daily Mail claim Sanllehi is opposed to the idea and is prepared to veto O’Leary’s induction.

Club chairman Sir Chips Keswick is the driving force behind O’Leary’s appointment, with the 61-year-old already acting in an ambassadorial role for Arsenal since 2014.

O’Leary is a regular at the Emirates and has close ties with the ‘old guard’ at Arsenal, including Keswick and Lord Harris of Peckham.

Sanllehi named former Gunner Edu as the club’s first technical director during the summer and has ‘reservations’ about creating another new position for O’Leary.

Tension over O’Leary is set to rumble on, while Arsenal chiefs continue to fend calls for Unai Emery to be sacked.

Arsenal are concerned about axing Emery mid-way through a campaign, but have given the coach until January to turn results around.

Arsenal are eight points off fourth place and appear set to miss out on Champions League football again this season.

Emery has a two-week reprieve from the mounting pressure with the international break underway.

Arsenal do not play again until 23 November when they host relegation battlers Southampton.
