Rashida Jones has opened up about filming her latest movie after losing her mother Peggy Lipton to cancer while become a first-time mother herself.

The 44-year-old actress earlier this month told NPR that she nearly turned down the role in On The Rocks following Lipton’s death from cancer in May 2019.

‘In a weird way, this movie was kind of a salvation for me because [director] Sofia [Coppola] is such a tender, present director and friend,’ Jones said.

‘To land in this world for a couple months when I was kind of going through the hardest period of my life was like a real gift,’ she added.

Jones and her rocker boyfriend Ezra Koenig, 36, have two-year-old son Isaiah together and the actress reflected on becoming a mother around the same that her mother died after being diagnosed in 2004 with colon cancer.

‘It was sort of like back-to-back-to-back-to-back, just wrenching, pulling my heart in all different directions,’ Jones said.

‘I was in grief-shock. I don’t even know if that’s a word, but I was just not in my body at all and just had a baby. I was doubly not in my body,’ she added.

Jones said she’s gained inspiration from her mother’s death claiming that ‘it really incites this much larger thing’.

‘Which is like OK, how do I live my life in a way that will honor my inevitable death?,’ she said.

‘As my dad always says, ”Live every day like it’s your last, and one day you’ll be right,’ Jones said, referencing her famous music producer father Quincy Jones, 87.
