A RARE Beatrix Potter 50p coin has sold for £430 on eBay – that’s 860 times its original value.

The coin features an illustration of Mrs Tittlemouse, a super tidy mouse who liked to constantly clean up after the messy insects that visited her at home.

The 50p piece is part of a series of coins launched to celebrate 150 years since the birth of the children’s author, Beatrix Potter.

More often, we hear about how Peter Rabbit versions of the coins from the series are the bestsellers, once even fetching up to £621 on eBay.

But the Mrs Tittlemouse is actually the third rarest coin in the collection, with just 1.7million of them being released into circulation.

Only the 2018 Flopsy Bunny and Peter Rabbit design is considered to be rarer with a mintage of 1.4million.

The coin was in a good condition even though it had been circulated

The coin sold online for the same price that it was listed for, after attracting two bids.

The 50p had been circulated too, which means that it might be worth checking your change to see if you’ve got one at home.

But you should also consider that the coin is in a good condition, which makes it more valuable to collectors who often pay more for uncirculated proof coins.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that yours will sell for as much either as it’s only worth what someone will pay for it.

What are the most valuable 50p coins?

HAVE a rummage through the change in your pocket for rare 50p coins because they could be worth a small fortune.

Sir Isaac Newton, up to £77

At first, just 375 of the  Sir Isaac Newton coins were released into the tills at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, the birthplace and home of the famous scientist, but more of the coins were slowly released into circulation – adding up to a total of 1.8million. The majority of these coins are still boxed in protective packaging and they’re selling for around £76.99 online.

Britannia was replaced by the new Royal Shield in 2008 as the standard 50p design, and none have been issued since, making the ones minted in that year valuable to collectors. Only 3.5million were issued into circulation and one recently sold on eBay for £1.81.

Another circulated Mrs Tittlemouse coin sold for £7 last month, while a commemorative colour version recently sold for £48 on eBay.

Brilliant uncirculated coins are no longer available to buy from the Royal Mint but silver proof coins gift sets are still in stock, although it will set you back £120.

Mrs Tittlemouse is not the rarest coin currently in circulation – only 210,000 of the Kew Garden 50ps were released in 2009.

These are considered to be the most sought after coins and can fetch up to £160 online.

Even coins that aren’t considered to be rare can be super valuable to a collector.
